The selector and the signal path.
Derrick Lewis—DJ Spade: Tha Specialist—works where Detroit’s machine music meets the infrastructure that carries it. His documented electronic catalog begins in 2008 with “Scare Tactics,” “101,” and “Watch,” early appearances connected to the Electrofunk and h3o network around longtime collaborator Mollison Folson.
In 2009, Lewis and Folson founded Detroit Techno Records as an independent route for Motor City artists. DTR’s catalog joins classic Detroit foundations with a direct street-level perspective, creating space for Suburban Knight, Body Mechanic, Ray 7, 207737, Lego Tha Cook, Folson & Tate, DJ Spade, and other voices operating beyond the city’s most familiar narratives.
Spade’s own records move between electro pressure, techno drive, acid tension, atmospheric synthesis, and the rhythm instincts of a veteran DJ. “This Illuminati,” Industrial Beings, Sunrise, “Kimondo Shujaa,” “The O-Village,” and “Babylon System” trace a catalog concerned with machinery, systems, identity, and Detroit’s ability to keep transmitting on its own terms.
That same philosophy powers The Bassment Detroit. As a resident co-host and systems builder, Spade works on both sides of the console—selecting records while maintaining the computers, streaming tools, and technical structure that turn a room in Detroit into a signal reaching far beyond it.
